Autohemotherapy is a form of transfusion therapy that is far more common as an alternative medicine modality in Europe than in the United States.
The goal of autohemotherapy is to boost the immune system’s ability to fight germs. A small amount of blood is withdrawn from the patient and then injected back into the patient, usually in a different spot. In some cases, the blood is mixed with a remedy such as bio-available oxygen, before re-injecting. Everything that was in the blood remains, including antibodies, hormones, and minerals. Any by-products from a disease process also stay in the blood.
How does autohemotherapy work? Practitioners believe that by putting the blood back into the body, the immune system is strengthened. The immune system recognizes the disease’s chemical markers in the blood and launches a fresh attack. Autohemotherapy is often used to treat chronic illnesses and problems with the immune system. Some people also believe it “revs up” their energy level and vitality. Autohemotherapy can be used to treat lung disease, allergies, fungal infections, rheumatic ailments, and rashes. It has been used to aid in smoking cessation and to help patients recover from long bouts of illness or after serious accidents.
IV vitamin therapy (or intravenous vitamin therapy) is a means by which a healthy and safe dose of nutrients are given to a patient through their circulatory system. This differs from autohemotherapy in that it does not involve removal of the patients blood for reintroduction but instead vitamins, minerals, and amino acids are put directly into the bloodstream, guaranteeing maximum absorption. When vitamins are taken by mouth, digestion may not extract the optimal amount of the nutrients. IV Vitamin Therapy can and has been used in conjunction with autohemotherapy to further bolster immune system response
IV vitamin therapy may be used as a preventive measure against aging, or to improve sports performance, increase energy, or create a greater sense of well-being. Still others may use this type of therapy at the onset of cold or other viral infection to enhance the body’s immune system response. Because it accesses the bloodstream, IV vitamin therapy should be administered only by an experienced health professional who can ensure the delivery is safe and the dosage is effective.
